This course represents a unique opportunity for you to study a wider range of species than those covered in traditional animal science degrees.Your learning will focus on the biology of zoo species, namely non-domestic and non-UK wildlife, and how to apply this to all aspects of the management and conservation of captive populations.If you’re passionate about ecology, conservation or animal biology, you’ll develop real-world skills with our field courses – studying large mammals in South Africa, dinosaur fossils in Canada or ecological interactions in Croatia.
This course focuses on conservation both in zoos and in the wild which is ideal if you wish to pursue a career involving wildlife, working in either of those environments.
The School also has close links with local zoos and aquariums to provide you with a wide range of experiences throughout your course.
This course will give you a sound knowledge and understanding of animal biology and the ability to apply this to the rapidly expanding animal industry.
Lectures cover the major scientific principles of: You will focus on the biology of exotic animals, namely non-domestic and non-UK wildlife and apply this to all aspects of management and species conservation of both captive and non-captive populations.
Compulsory fieldwork will not cost you anything extra.
For optional fieldwork, you will have to contribute up to £150, plus the cost of your flight (based on costs for 2017/18). Having a biology degree from a Russell Group university will help my application stand out to future employers.A QMUL qualification equips you with a well-rounded biological education and transferable skills that will open doors to many career paths.Our programme will give you an overview of modern zoological thinking, with a strong emphasis on the underlying concepts that shape our understanding of animal diversity.You’ll receive a thorough grounding in vertebrate and invertebrate biology, plus modules in physiology, behaviour, evolution and neurobiology.Modules in molecular and population genetics, ecology, statistics and immunology are also available.We will support you to undertake work experience placement opportunities where possible or a full sandwich year placement during your third year.Links with industry enable you to gain valuable experience at zoological and wildlife parks throughout the course.We also learned about Whipsnade Zoo's objective of to caring for the larger animals who need more space to roam.Further to the two zoos, members of London Zoological Society also work closely with those local communities where the animals are found to find a long-term solution to the near extinction of many animals.One of the key features of this course is our strong emphasis on field trips – these include day trips as well as national and overseas residential trips with the majority of these trips being free.On arrival at the zoo, we took part in a lecture run by one of the zoos members who works in the education aspect of the zoo's function.
