As we discussed in class, one of the main flaws was the inability of the workers to advance themselves in society beyond the point of keeping food in their stomachs.- Germinal, written by Emile Zola is about a man, Etienne, who receives a mining job at Le Voreux, a coal mine.While working, Etienne discovers the harsh working conditions, and the malnourishment men and women have.Downs syndrome and foetal alcohol spectrum disorder are two conditions which may affect the development of the child.This assignment aims to explore what causes these two conditions, as well as how research can improve the outcome for children affected by these conditions....The miners, following in Etienne’s footsteps, condemn capitalism and the bourgeois.Zola condemns capitalism and shows its power of corruption among the bourgeois, the miners, and in Etienne.The graphic images presented by Zola leaves the reader wondering about a society that could allow such harsh conditions for their young.Everyone worked yet they could afford not meat but just bread from their earnings.Food was scarce and the only activity besides work was sex.The workload increased at any time and the worker was at the absolute mercy of the manager or owner of the mine where he worked....
