The small chunks, as you call them, and the video lessons make writing so easy. Essentials in Writing focuses primarily on teaching and modeling portions of a composition over several days resulting in shorter lesson times over several days versus longer lecture periods and assignments.I was a little worried because he only completed levels 9-11, but I can see he was well prepared. Essentials in Writing is considered a complete writing curriculum as it includes both grammar and composition instruction.I am thankful we waited, and I don’t plan on changing it up for Simon. And I can hear the string of “but-but-buts” from the Midwest Homeschool Convention to the classical practicum trainings. is a writing curriculum designed to introduce high school students to the concepts of fiction. The second track, which is optional, is designed for students who have already begun writing their own short story or novel.

But, my math-loving, left-brain self cannot “teach” creative writing. This writing course is designed to help high schoolers write fictional short stories and novels. One track is designed for all writers no matter how proficiently they can write.

So when I began homeschooling, I started to ponder how I would implement language arts. By “read great writing” I mean no one has read it to them. Listening to great writing has taught them how to write. Don’t we need to be learning direct objects and diagramming and making sure our participles aren’t dangling?! I cringe when I hear someone say, “My kids hate grammar.” I actually walked out of a homeschool workshop once when the speaker admitted her students hated this “necessary” subject; her first and second grader students would cry through grammar lessons.

I hate to admit this piece of trivia because I overuse clichés. The local elementary schools boasted about their writing workshops, but these high school students could not write. By “exposed” I mean they haven’t read great writing. It sounds crazy, but the bulk of our “writing curriculum” has simply been reading aloud and allowing the boys to hear sentence patterns, syntax, and character voices.
