When you meet with a potential supervisor, you do not yet need to have a definitive research question.
This is something a thesis supervisor will help with.
The thesis only require a fit with the general themes and concerns of the MA.

Students should feel free to pursue the topic(s) that truly interest them, although it is hoped that they will take advantage of the research specialties available in the IR Program and related departments at NYU such as History, Politics, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, Middle East & Islamic Studies, Russian & Slavic Studies, French Studies, German Studies, and Portuguese & Spanish Studies.
Once you have identified a potential thesis supervisor, you must ask him or her to advise the thesis!
This should take place during fall or spring semester of your junior year.
The thesis is the culmination of independent supervised research and should be approximately 15,000 words in length.
The thesis provides you with an opportunity to write a substantial piece of scholarship on a topic of interest to you using the research skills and knowledge you have developed during your IR course work and field study.
